Xavier-Tulane Bachelor's/ Master's Program
This program will allow the
students in the Departments of Physics and Chemistry at Xavier to complete the
requirements for both the bachelor's degree in their respective Departments and
the master's degree in the School of Engineering at Tulane within five years
from their matriculation. Summer research work will be required for the timely
completion of the masters thesis.
Eligibility: Only students with a
grade-point average of 3.2 or above in the beginning of the senior year will be
eligible. Interested students must apply to the Graduate Division of the School
of Engineering before the end of their Junior year for admission and must be
recommended by their departments. At this time, the students must declare an
area of specialization for their Graduate work. Description of the program: A
student must complete all of the academic requirements for both the bachelor's
and master's degrees with thesis. It is expected that the students will enroll
in Xavier and will follow their normal curriculum in the first three years. The
course program of the students during the fourth and fifth years will be
determined on the basis of their academic interests: During the fourth (senior)
academic year, the students will take a number (four to six) undergraduate
engineering courses at Tulane, which will serve the double purpose of
satisfying their undergraduate elective science courses and the prerequisites
of the graduate courses in the specific area they choose to do their masters
thesis. It is also expected that the students will conduct undergraduate
research during the senior year, which may lead to honors thesis. The student
should continue on the same or a similar project during the summer following
the fourth year and will progress towards a master's thesis. During the fifth
year, the students will take eight additional graduate-level courses to satisfy
the master's coursework requirements and will complete the required thesis
under the supervision of an academic advisor.
Department Notification:
Interested students must notify their department chairs of their intention to
pursue the five-year program three weeks before the end of their junior year at
Xavier. At the same time they must apply to the Graduate Division of the School
of Engineering for acceptance into the five-year program. It is possible for a
student to take some graduate courses in his/her senior year before the
completion of the bachelor's requirements.
